There was a man who spoke last night- he was probably in his late 40's- a doctor. He began to talk about love. He has been with the same woman since 1981, but he talked about how he never believed in romantic love, much less experience it. He said he always thought it was for weak people or dreamers. Until 8 years ago. He fell in love with a medical student who was working with him. She would be leaving town soon and it was unethical anyway, so any sort of relationship with her was impossible. He stopped working with her and forced himself to forget about her. He has his wife, after all. His best friend.
Then a few months ago he fell in love again, this time with his yoga instructor. He's been sleepless, exercising too much, waking up in the middle of the night crying, seeing therapists, lost and confused and wildly in love. And this time it wasn't impossible.
To hear a grown man speak of these things- we're really not that different from each other, just the same, and definitely connected.
He ended with, "I don't know what to do, but I know I can hurt a lot of people."
